AMELOGENESIS IMPERFECTA

This a hereditary disorder causing an irregular development of the dental enamel. There are three forms. Increased levels of decay occur and restorative treatment is inevitable and mandatory to preserve the dentition.

Hypoplastic Form:  Inadequate deposition of the enamel matrix. Some parts calcify normally. The teeth have thin enamel that my be pitted.

Hypomaturation Form:  Adequate deposition of enaml but the enamle crystal does not mature normally. The result is soft pigmented enamle that chips easily.

Hypocalcified Form:   Inadequate mineralisation. The result is that the enamel breaks away after a few years.

Restorative treatment where possible will usually necessitate full coveral crowns.
