CONSCIOUS I.V. SEDATION
Pamper yourself ... It's like travelling
First Class!
Conscious sedation is no longer just for "chickens" or dental phobics.
Aesthetic dentistry takes time and requires acute attention to detail. Successful people often just don't have the time to spend at the dental practice to undergo aesthetic, implant or reconstructive dentistry, Many executives and professionals would rather just get as
much treatment done at one session but do not relish the thought of lying all day in a dental chair with mouth wide open.
Sophisticated intravenous sedation techniques can facilitate sessions of up to eight hours. It allows the prosthodontist to perform the highest standard of treatment. Patients remain conscious during the entire session, pain-free and able to communicate with the
doctors and respond to commands. There is an absence of anxiety and patients wake up rested and relaxed. An illusion of sleep occurs with virtually no memory of the event or procedures. It's just like travelling first class.
HIGH ANXIETY
An American Dental Association survey found that 10% of Americans are so highly anxious about dental treatment that they simply avoid seeing a dentist. A further 15% find dentistry so
unpleasant that they rarely complete a course of treatment.
LOW PAIN THRESHOLD
Some people perceive pain differently from others or at a much lower stimulus. Sometimes a dentist may have difficulty obtaining adequate pain control using local anaesthetics due to anatomical or
physiological factors.
PHYSICAL & MENTAL DISABILITIES
Severe gaggers and those with physical or mental disabilites have traditionally sought general anaesthesia or sedation for dentistry. Chronic back pain can make routine dentistry a tiring and
bothersome event.
I.V. SEDATION versus GENERAL ANAESTHESIA
Intravenous sedationis a safe procedure with no post-operative "hangover" or nose and throat pain usually associated with nasal or oral intubation. Absence of a endotracheal tube and cuff allows the
dentist more working room in the mouth. It also allows the dentist to have the full cooperation of the patient when performing required procedures.
Contraindications to I.V. sedation
In general only reasonably fit and healthy people are suitable for I.V. sedation in a dental surgery. We recommend that you first contact your family doctor or personal physician as to your suitability before contacting our practice.
CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
Dr. Wright provides most of his own I.V. sedations. For complex surgical cases we arrange for an anaesthesiologists to provide the sedation. Dr. Wright himself has over twenty years experience working with patients under sedation and anaesthesia.
