WHAT IS A DENTAL IMPLANT?

A dental implant is a sophiticated screw usually made out of pure titanium or titanium alloyed with a small amount of aluminum and vanadium for increased strength. The surface of the dental implant is "sand" blasted and acid-etched or otherwise treated to increase the surface area for contact with bone and improve its biocompatability with bone.  Dental implants serve to function as artificial tooth roots.

Dental implants vary considerably in terms of sophistication with five or six manufactures controlling most of the market. Strict infection control and sterile surgical technique are critical to the success of implant dentistry .....

Cone Beam CT Scan & Computer Navigation Software now permit prosthodontists to simulate surgery and prosthetic treatment on a computer. From this we can fabricate an exact replica of the patients' jaws.

Dental implants serve to function as artificial tooth roots. Although some narrow implants are solid structures, most are hollow screws into which is screwed an attachment called an abutment. The abutment projects through the gum into the mouth and a crown is attached to that by cement or another screw. Modern dental implants have been in existence for over twenty years. Considerable advancement in the evolution in dental implants has occurred in the last five years. The latest implants have a success rate of over 95% and a predicted service life of twenty years. Great advances have been made in the surgical techniques for bone grafting and augmentation of deficient sites. Osseointegration is the term used by the profession to describe the biocompatable close approximation of living healthy bone to the surface of the implant.
