Specialist Prosthodontist London
Dr. Wright is a California trained and licensed prosthodontist practising in London England
A Prosthodontist is a Specialist in Aesthetic, Implant & Reconstructive Dentistry (American Dental Association specifications only). A prosthodontist is trained in the clinical and laboratory skills necessary to restore the most complex cases to the highest levels of precison and aesthetics. Training at an American Dental School involves a three to five year residency. A prosthodontist is considered to be the team leader in cases requiring multi-disciplinary care.
Many prosthodontists, such as Dr. Wright, have taken further surgical training in implant dentistry. There are only a few American-trained prosthodontists practising in the UK. Dr. Wright is currently the only California trained and licensed prosthodontist in the UK. Dr. Wright has ten years clinical practice experience in California and fifteen years previous practice experience in Canada.
The American Board of Prosthodontics set down a series of clinical, oral and written examinations spanning several years. Just a small percentage of prosthodontists take these rigorous examinations hence only a dozen become certified each year. Those who pass become Diplomates of the American Board of Prosthodontics. There are only four American Board Certified Prosthodontists practising in the UK.
Prosthodontic Services include:
Prosthodontics is the recognised speciality of dentistry concerned with prosthetics i.e. involving laboratory or CAD manufactured replacement parts for teeth. These include crowns, inlays, veneers, implants, dentures, splints. Maxillofacial prosthodontics is a sub-specialty of prosthodontics concerned with prostheses for the jaws and face.
Prosthodontists have been certified in USA since 1949 and in Britain since 2000. An American qualified prosthodontist is a dentist who has received three to five years' post-graduate training in that specialty at a recognised dental school. American-trained prosthodontists are also skilled technicians and dental ceramists.
The American Dental Association (ADA) defines a prosthodontist as a Specialist in Aesthetic, Implant & Reconstructive Dentistry. A prosthodontist is trained to examine, diagnose and treat the entire dentition and stomatognathic complex. If a patient requires extensive treatment or implant dentistry he or she would generally go to the prosthodontist as the lead specialist. The prosthodontist would diagnose the case and formulate a treatment plan. In addition to performing the prosthodontics, the prosthodontist will coordinate the treatment from start to finish with other medical and dental specialists where necessary.
The complex part of prosthodontics is the diagnosis and treatment planning phase. Reconstructive dentistry is a bio-engineering project that must withstand years of distructive forces and microbiological and chemical assault. A thorough understanding and knowledge of dental technology and biomaterials science is essential if aesthetic, implant or reconstructive dentistry is to succeed.
After graduating as a prosthodontist, a small percentage of these specialists go on to take a series of clinical and academic examinations culminating in becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics and a Fellow of the American College of Prosthodontists. This credential is only awarded to about a dozen prosthodontists in the world each year. Dr. Wright is one of them. Retaining a prosthodontist to treat your case does not in itself guarantee success of treatment but statistically significantly improves your odds. As a rule of thumb more knowledge is usually better than less.
