DENTINOGENESIS IMPERFECTA

Dentinogenesis Imperfecta (DI) causes the teeth to be opalescent affecting both primary and secondary dentitions. the teeth are are bluish-brown and translucent. Enamel is lost early, and the exposed dentine undergoes rapid attrition.

Type 1:   DI with Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Type 2:   DI without Osteogenesis Imperfecta

Type 3:   Brandywine type, which alos appears in the absence of Osteogenesis Imperfecta but is clustered within a racial isolate in Maryland, USA. This is likely a variant of Type 2 disease. In addiitons to classic findings of DI, radiographs may exhibit multiple periapical radiolucencies, and large pulp chambers that my lead to multiple pulp exposures.

It is essential that a diagnosis of DI is made early in a child's life so that a orthodontic, preventive and prosthodontic treatment plan is developed to preserve the dentition.
