BULIMIA AND DENTAL EROSION

Bulimia affects the teeth causing acid erosion of the enamel and dentine. Reconstruction of a worn or eroded dentition should only be started once the underylying cause has determined and arrested. A Prosthodontist is the Specialist Dentist trained in reconstructive dentistry.

TOOTH SURFACE LOSS

Tooth surface loss is so gradual that the patient does not usually become aware of the problem until it is too far advanced to treat without extensive reconstructive dentistry. In many cases the tooth surface loss may occur on the inside surface and the teeth may not be restorable. The cause may be erosion from acid reflux, bulimia, chemicals, attrition or abrasion. See below for before prosthodontic treatment.

RESTORATION OF THE WORN DENTITION

The key to successful treatment of eroded dentitions is early diagnosis, preventive measures and interceptive dentistry. More often than not the damage is quite advanced before the patient attends the dentist. Crowns, onlays or veneers may be required to restore form and function. See below for after prosthodontic treatment.
